Were Iraqis really broadly nationalistic above these ethnic conflicts, I don't believe we would see as many Iraqis murdered by these terrorist thugs as we see. They wouldn't murder their own countrymen just for the sake of attacking the US by proxy. I don't know if you can conclude anything one way or the other about Iraqi nationalism, just because the Baathist/Wahabbi/criminals who are running the insurgency are willing to kill Iraqis in large numbers. The Nazis were willing to kill Germans in large numbers but that didn't mean that Germans, broadly speaking, were not nationalistic.
