Excellent point Red. Loyalty always has a context and the context always places one in an oppositional role regarding some conflict. The context, as you pointed out, may be one that is not worthy of an otherwise nobly principled individual.

We see a guard dog’s loyalty to his master as a good thing for the two of them. This is one of the few that can be viewed without animus toward the dog for taking the position of protector of master and domain.

Fidelity to kin and country, may simply mean that you are willing to make personal sacrifices related to your commitments to others. However, extreme conduct in this area can be expressed as despicable behavior, such as torturing prisoners or slaughtering innocents to advance the objectives of your group.

My recommendation is that people seek an understanding of the noble principles of the human condition and that loyalty to these principles trumps loyalty to commitments to conflicting human bonds.
