Most people interpret the term 'support' as doing what you can to help people accomplish goals they have set for themselves. And so when I hear the slogan it sticks in my craw a little.

I understand that. I'm not arguing the merits of the nanny interpretation of support over yours. All I'm arguing is that the people who take that approach do so sincerely. As long as that's their sincere interpretation of "troop support," then the expression is not code. Code terminology is always, by definition, intentionally misleading. If it's not code, then what we have left is an honest difference of perspective on what it means to support the troops.

I can't help but conclude, as Redfish suggested, that the slogan is a little to conveniently associated with self serving agendas on the left as well as on the right to be an innocent comment.

I agree. Professing troop support is mostly a way of saying "I'm a good guy."
