I had in mind clarity rather than values. Looking back, that wasn't very clear. <g>

When we have an umbrella term like "family planning" that subsumes a variety of activities from birth control to abortion, equating the umbrella term with the most negative of the items in the set is an expression of the devil effect. Equating the term with the most positive of the subordinate items is an expression of the halo effect. Doing so is an obstacle to clarity. It also is an indicator of the speaker's POV. My point was that there are positive elements to family planning and that it is neither clear nor fair to demonize it.
