as various securities I own keep recasting ordinary dividends into long-term capital gains distributions, return of capital, partially tax-exempt dividends, yada yada.


You had to know that legislation would come with some gotchas. It's not that easy to separate out cap gains from income on these various income vehicles.

Sounds like the tax free dividend rules will take it out of your hide in time spent trying to figure out which is what.
