I would image that given the physical stress that is placed on a jet fighter/bomber, the F-15, F-16s, and F-18 will need to be replaced anyway.

These old planes can hold up for a 40+ year frame life. The avionics keeps getting upgraded. They are using them now as bombers, and the big knock here is "no loiter time." The AF is desparate for more planes like the A-10, which will loiter, and transports, which are really being worn out.

Our 15s,16s, and 18s, couldn't safely operate below 10K feet in Iraq. The A-10s were down on the deck where the military needs them. The military hates the A-10s and keeps trying to dump them.

The real AF problem is a "Flag" one. Too many fighter pilot Generals. They need to be forced to promote to 4 star from the other divisions.

We have a similar "flag" problem in the Army. No 4 star MP general. If our prisoner problem in Iraq explodes again, that will be the reason.
