to feel far safer with hard drive storage

What about powering the extra HD down until needed? Would that be an extra degree of safety?? I don't know how to do that, but I do have spare HD capacity. I am told that HD's burn out after a certain number of hours of operation.

P.S. My gal Keri's 1TB drive went belly up a few days ago. Sent it to papa, week or so turn around; came back today not a 0 or 1 missing. Yeah, she had to spring for the one way freight, but the rest was covered by warranty. Try that with thousands of CDs.
