Fire-tragedy sub on way to Canada

A STRICKEN Canadian submarine was due to begin the journey home today, three months after it caught fire in the North Atlantic.

The HMCS Chicoutimi, a former Royal Navy vessel, was on its maiden voyage under the Canadian flag from Scotland when it caught fire last October.

One crew member, Lieutenant Chris Saunders, died after two blazes ripped through the vessel.

The submarine, one of four sold by the UK to Canada, surfaced but rescue crews struggled to reach it because of bad weather.

The Chicoutimi was towed back to HM Naval Base Clyde at Faslane, near Helensburgh, to undergo repairs.

Today the submarine was set to begin its 14-day journey across the Atlantic inside a Norwegian semi-submersible transporter, the Eide.

In a £1.44 million operation, the Chicoutimi has been welded to the Eide’s hull as rough seas are expected on the crossing.
