there is some merit to the stock buybacks eating all the earnings, but in the case of ebay goog and others the earnings are outpacing any buybacks pretty dramatically (goog being a new company doesn't do buybacks and they are generating 400mm in cash per quarter).

I think the problem with options, from a management perspective is that they absolutely do the job in hypergrowth periods. GOOG needs options now and other growing companies. But mature companies can't afford them, and then you have the cisco case where after 15 years of hypergrowth options are a part of the culture, but they can't be anymore.
