there are two styles to voip -- SIP, and PacketCable. PC provides the same sort of QoS service you get with a baby bell - 5 9's. SIP doesn't; but you can take the phone with you ... call from anywhere.

I saw a press release today for the first time, saying SIP was better. In that case, SIP was better BECAUSE you can call from anywhere, and that's what the mso selected (SIP).

VoIP via PacketCable (preferred packet routing for the call instead of best efforts routing (sip), etc.) means the phone stays in the one home -- like a 'regular' phone. PC has the better QoS; developers would like to develop a SIP protocol with better QoS.

Ntop offers SIP, PacketCable, (wi-fi, satellite) voIP. Vonage, DDDC, Packet8, AT&T's CallVantage each only offer SIP voIP.
