You cannot claim that Reagan caused the Soviet Union to collapse because he made a speech calling for the Berlin Wall to be torn down.

The importance of that speech, and in particular, that phrase in that speech, cannot be overstated. But it was more than just a speech.

The bottom line, indisputable fact is that Reagan was the catalyst that made it happen. Without him, we might still be facing the Cold War Soviet Russia. We don't know.

For you to discount Reagan's importance to this subject is a result of either ignorance or a general unwillingness to accept a fact that is inarguable -- Conservatives make better leaders. Just as Bush has been the catalyst for the positive things happening in the MidEast today, Reagan was the catalyst that made the Cold War come to an end. Gorbachev's Nobel Prize notwithstanding.

"Revisionist history."

Nonsense. If you want to read history through blinders, so be it.

You cannot claim that Reagan caused the Soviet Union to collapse because he made a speech calling for the Berlin Wall to be torn down. By the time Reagan was elected, the standard of living in Poland and East Germany was already higher than it was in Moscow. When a colonial power, which is what the USSR was, starts subsidizing the colonies to the point that their economic well being is damaged, the writing is on the wall. If you want to believe that the USSR cratered because they got labeled as the Evil Empire, well, that is nice. Not reality-based at all, but the Bush Administration is pretty contemptuous about those who are reality-based, so you fit right in...

Not to mention that their industrial infrastructure was badly deteriorated and in need of innovation. Our factories were able to produce nearly double the production with the same square footage and less employees. And of course, Afghanistan was no boon to their national treasury.

Reagan was a bad actor by Hollywood standards but a good one by DC standards. That's why they believe!
