Through our military buildup. Through SDI. Through his rhetoric. Which is just about all a president has short of war or the threat thereof to use in conducting foreign policy.

The USSR's problems were centered on many fronts...widening economic disparity with the west, unsustainable economic support for its proxy states in Eastern Europe, decades of cold war spending, massive beauracracy and inefficiency, ethnic strife in the south, and not the least of motives, perestoika and glasnost, initiatives which gave birth to a losening of the central grip, as well as strong secessionist feelings in Ukraine, the Baltics, Eastern Europe and the southern provinces.

Reagan, Shmeagan... the soviet union was a victim of the peaking of its internal problems...it's like bush demanding that Syria leave Lebanon after Syria has already said they would...LOL
