Cactus, I am from the Bay Area. Plunkett did go to James Lick and we played them my Freshman and Sophomore years. That was when my schools, James Logan and then Newark High, were part of the Eastern Santa Clara Valley Atheletic League. My junior year, the schools in our area broke off and formed the Mission Valley Athletic League and we no longer played Lick. I think that is when he became prominent because I don't remember playing against him.

James Lick was one of the football powers, along with Willow Glen (40 games in a row undefeated), Lincoln (lost to Willow Glen by a 3-0 score to extend Willow Glen's record) and San Jose High. Washington High was the top opponent in the new league. I am not certain if Bill Walsh was still coaching them back then. I didn't know the names of other coaches. <G>
