The European Union voiced shock and concern Monday at the “disproportionate” use of force by Turkish police to clamp down on a demonstration in Istanbul ahead of International Women’s Day. “We were shocked by images of the police beating women and young people demonstrating in Istanbul,” said the EU, which is urging Turkey to press ahead with reforms ahead of the planned start of EU entry talks in October. “We condemn all violence, as demonstrations must be peaceful,” it added in a statement. “On the eve of a visit by the EU during which the rights of women will be an important issue, we are concerned to see such disproportionate force used against demonstrators,” it added. afp
