Yes, that is one of the most amazing things to happen in my lifetime. You won't believe this, but as a hopeless romantic, prior to 1990 I used to drive down the empty and quiet road to the Güstrow bridge between berlin and Potsdam.
That´s the one where the spies used to be exchanged during the cold war.
At that time this was closed to normal traffic - besides such spies as Richard Burton and others in the movies and it was just sitting there as a monument to what used to be.
I could stand there for an hour, just watching and dreaming and trying to imagine how things could have been, how maybe some day in a distant future past my lifetime and under peculiar circumstances everything would suddenly open up...

Then that indeed happened, and it took place in my lifetime on air on TV and it was unbelievable. Nobody but Kohl at that time undewrstood this unique opportunity, grabbed it and run with it. That makes him a grand statesman.
