There was a piece written somewhere (maybe NYT op-ed) after Powell resigned stating that if Bolton were appointed Secretary of State, it would symbolize a really bad shift even further right in the administration... well, this might be worse -- Bolton is like the archenemy of the UN. I don't like the UN at all, but I feel that it's so important that we figure out how to work with them rather than alienating them further. Bolton talks about pulling out of the UN. Great. When I said the "current political environment" I didn't mean right vs left in the US. I was talking in terms of America's relationship with the rest of the world. At this point, that relationship is fairly spasmodic at this point with it being more off than on. This Bolton guy will antagonize the relationship even further. And I think its really important to see this for what it is. IMO there is no change in the administration's policies, and more importantly, their attitude.......forget their recent pronouncements to the contrary. Its a game. You play hardball for years, then suddenly appear to be softening up only to make another very strong move in the direction you want to go. After his inauguration, he sent Rice over to Europe to warm them up. Then he followed......playing mr. nice guy. Shortly after he gets back, he puts a hardline butthead into the UN so he can knock heads with the same Europeans he and Rice just wined and danced. They play on the foibles of human nature. When someone acts all nice-nice, people expect that that person is nice. That's when you come out from left field and whack them over the head. IMO its better to be en guarde with these people 24/7. ted
