1) We are morally superior. That may not always be the case, but just to simplify matters, let us say that that is true.

<<<I think its a safe assumption when you are talking about government's like Saddam's regime or Kim Il Sung's. >>>

Actually, it is not even as simple as all that. Pure evil can't exist by itself. For evil to exist, it has to pretend to some amount of good. It has to fool just enough people to keep chugging along.

Of course, a lot of coercion helps. But, you can't do all the coercion all by yourself. You need help. You need to be nice to the people at the top of the coercion food chain. The people at the top of the coercion food chain are not all dummies. Some are of course fooled into thinking they are doing the greater good. Some only want the goodies. But it takes all kinds to keep the crap going. It isn't as easy as it looks.

Even for evil people, they can't rest on their laurels. They have to keep the evil food chain going. That takes some effort.

2) We are only trying to help others.

<<<Actually that is not assumed. That we are trying to help others is assumed by Elroy's argument but not that we are ONLY trying to help others.>>>

Of course it is lot more complex than just one or two variables at play. Life is very complex. We, humans, have our limitations. For us, we can only try to isolate one or two variables when we are testing hypotheses. That is, if we make any effort at all to try to understand things.
