Is Canseco very smart? I have read nothing except the harm that steroids do to the human body. I do not have enough interest in baseball to read the book, but I do think steroid use has just totally killed sports in general (although not everyone realizes it yet). Is there a serious argument that steroids are a positive thing?

Jose is not the brightest bulb in the circuit. He's a guy who lives for today, so it's natural that he'd view regular use of anabolic steroids and HGH as relatively safe. He's also an exaggerator. Only about 5-10% of the players in MLB were juiced, not 40%. Today, the number is a lot lower because of the recent testing and the penalty.

There is almost no steroid use in the minors because they are banned and testing is frequent. But there is growing use in high school and college. That is where the emphasis needs to be in prevention.
