Syria is a small oil producing nation compared to other OPEC producers and the U.S. had not been buying oil from IRAQ since George #1 chased Sadam out of Kuwait.

The chart that Terry posted shows a one year time frame. How long did Bush's speech last?

Or was this just coincidence? Today's spike was not particularly remarkable, and actually much smaller than other sessions, as you can see from looking at the size of the candles on the chart below. The oil futures have been on a tear for months now---up more than 80% from a year ago:
