The board is basically about language. I've always been interested in language (English major who read a lot of Stanley Fish and Derrida and stuff like that).

We are bombarded with signs these days (troop ribbons, bumper stickers etc.) and I think it is interesting to ponder on what these signs signify.

Imo they all mean exactly the same thing.

Regarding whether I like it when people feel good, I am completely indifferent to most of humanity ... whether they feel good or not isn't of concern to me.

Social comparisons are always dangerous.

I see no problem with stating, my son Johnny runs the mile in 4 minutes but my son Billy runs the mile in 5 minutes.

I have a big problem with just saying to Billy, "Why can't you be more like your brother?"

Hypothetically (I have no sons).

Statements of pride that lack criterion are subject to being interpreted as an unqualified social comparison, which has a tendency to offend everyone who does not feel included in the statement of pride. ... whether intended or not.
