To me a country, especially one as big as ours, is an awfully big thing to love.

Well, yes, I agree. I wouldn't think one would have to love everything about a country to love the country any more than you need to love everything about a person to love that person. You love the essence, the soul, seems to me, some specialness you find in the entity you love. Perhaps you don't find anything special about America. I do, and I stated what it was. I can't abide country music or progressive jazz. Same goes for professional wrestling and pineapple pizza. Those are all uniquely American elements that I definitely don't love, but I can still love my country.
