I think going to the moon is the one great thing the U.S. has done in my lifetime, I remember watching it at school.

I would like to get a Mars mission underway, but only if we pay as we go ... palming the cost off on a future generation isn't the same.

Most people have no interest in it, though, at least not if it involves any sacrifice.

What did you feel when Kennedy said "We choose to go to the moon? We choose to go to the moon..."

I was proud of that. You see the way Kennedy framed it. He said "we," which intentionally made me the rest of us a part of his vision. My contribution was limited to my tax dollars, which I was old enough at the time to be paying. So I felt that accomplishment was a little bit mine, even though my bit was beyond trivial.

I really admire the folks who pulled that off. I wouldn't describe that as being proud of them, though, more like in awe and appreciative. I don't feel proud of the liberation of France from the Nazis any more than I feel ashamed of slavery.
