Well, it's hard to argue with a 30,000 foot view. I guess the devil in the details is, well, ones interpretation of the devil in the details.

'Imposing the will of the group on one's freedom' sounds like code to me. I've heard this same argument used by gay marriage foes. I never understood why allowing gay couples to formalize their union, and enjoy the rights and benefits of their heterosexuals counterparts, imposed anyone's will on anyone else. But I've been accused of being slow in the past; maybe this is just another manifestation...

Now, I think do your words could readily be applied to any other number of current issues: gun control, abortion, religions role in government and society, etc. But, many of these issues have a dividing line where both sides make good arguments. In such a split, the issue becomes not imposing the will of one side on the other, but reaching a compromise that is both principled and tolerant.
