Already Folke Bernadotte understood that no lasting peace could ever be between the an Arab state and Israel in what was then called Palestine with either the Arabs or Israel controlling Jerusalem. His idea was to go ahead with a peace plan initially excluding the Jerusalem question and next head for declaring Jerusalem an open city under international control with equal access for everybody.

Both sides hated him and Igun killed him for that.

But in all reality I believe he was right and unless a solution like this is eventually forced upon the all of the parties one day, lasting peace in the area is quite hard to imagine.

Some 91 percent of the Jewish public in Israel would be unwilling to give up Israeli control of the Western Wall in exchange for peace,

Is that the wall thought to be part of the original Jewish temple near Al Aqsa mosque? I thought it was called the "wailing wall"?
