Already Folke Bernadotte understood that no lasting peace could ever be between the an Arab state and Israel in what was then called Palestine with either the Arabs or Israel controlling Jerusalem. His idea was to go ahead with a peace plan initially excluding the Jerusalem question and next head for declaring Jerusalem an open city under international control with equal access for everybody.

Its really the smart way to go. There are as many Muslim artifacts in Jerusalem as Jewish and Christian. However, there also so many Israelis living there as well. I am sure it will be hard for the Israelis to change. In addition, Jerusalem has become an important center for the tech industry in Israel.

A not so well known fact:

When in Medina, Mohammad originally had his faithful pray in the direction of Jerusalem. Only later did Muslims pray in the direction of Mecca.

Both sides hated him and Igun killed him for that.

But in all reality I believe he was right and unless a solution like this is eventually forced upon the all of the parties one day, lasting peace in the area is quite hard to imagine.

Agreed. Its a mess.
