Syria had absolutely nothing to gain from the assassination of former Lebanese prime minister Hariri. In fact, the assassination was a catastrophe for the Syrian government. It is Osama bin Laden's aim, and perhaps Iran's, to destabilize Lebanon and Syria in order to draw the U.S. in deeper. Instability serves bin Laden's revolutionary purposes and aids Iran by creating new problems for the U.S. in the region.

Of all the conspiracy theories, this one makes the most sense. I didn't think of bin Laden. I really thought it was Israel who shot the former prime minister. But bin Laden would have more to gain than even Israel. I never thought Syria as the culprit made sense.

This guy brings up another good point which I had forgotten. Syria's leader, Assad, is from the Ala'ite sect. They are a different form of Islam, and if I remember correctly, are respected in Syria for the fairness. The odd thing about this is that the Ala'ites are a very small minority. So Assad has to be careful to please the predominate Sunnis. I suspect that's why a possible Shia crescent worries him a great deal.

Bush hasn't sufficient troops to occupy Iraq and none to spare with which to invade Syria. But the lack of means does not stop Bush from issuing ultimatums. Bush's tough talk plays well to his supernationalist supporters at home.

Bush should order Syrrian troops out of Lebanon, and into Iraq! They've got decades of experience in the peacekeeping role, they could let some US troops come home.

Damn, I should be in his cabinet! That would be brilliant, if GB politeley requested the help of the Syrian military in stabilizing Iraq, and promised funds and aid if Syria would do so. It would introduce Muslim peacekeepers to Iraq, allow Syria and graceful return to normal country from the Pyrrhia state it is becoming, and confuse the hell out of everyone!
