KB that ugly OSX candle may be due to XOM.

Before the close today CNBS Maria was interviewing the XOM chairman. I could not believe what I heard from him ... in short, he said there are no fundamental problems in obtaining more crude, nor problems in the global supply and demand for crude to justify today's prices. She asked him about using XOMs billions in cash to acquire other companies with reserves. His answer, no they are all too expensive right now, so he would hold back until prices were at their bottom. Twelve minutes later, the majors, e and p, gassers, and most of the sector dropped like a rock, and ran a lot of stops on the way down. After hours, some are up, but most likely that is simply short covering.
It may be we are at a top here, but I thought that at $30, $40, $50 also. Best to all for many years of a great board, from a long quiet lurker.

KB - I enjoy your points stressing the homebuilders. I believe there are relevant similarities here with energy. If I recall correctly we were shorting some of them in 2001, oh yeah that was a top. I made some good plays then and later forgot about them. Now I realize that if I put all my assets long in the home boys in 2001 I would be much richer now I suppose.

Well that was 3-4 years ago. Dianna's opinions about the energy sector are quite similar to mine. I expect 3-4 years from now the energy producers will be much higher valued than today just like the homebuilders. Here we are at OSX 140~ and some of the bears here have been negative since OSX 80.

Well you place your bets and take your chances. Right now I am betting that I can maneuver around the herd and do better than just staying 100% invested over the next few years.

Hi KB

Well it really must be homecoming week around here with you and Slider and Diana and John Q showing up so I thought it might be time for me to chime in.

I have a problem with the warnings of imminent collapse from people who basically missed a fabulous run in energy stocks. Not just the drillers and oil service....mega-caps, E&Ps large and small, anything from Canada especially the trusts, the international oils have all been extraordinary plays in recent months.

Hell, you can get out of these guys in five minutes but these kind of runs are fortune-makers. If you have been hanging around the patch for years and simply missed it, chomping on a large slice of humble pie might be more appropriate than acting as if you did nothing wrong.

I missed a significant part of it myself because I just didn't see it coming and staying that long so let me be the FIRST to say....

"I blew it!"

People like Frank and CC had the stones to stick with this run.

I want to know what they think. The stuff from the non-players has a faint odor of sour grapes about it.

Best,
John
