Since I make my living using compressed gases (uh, I mean oxygen, air, and various mixtures containing CO2, He, etc), I thought about trying to put together a windmill system with something to compress gas as the form of stored energy. I'm not sure it is practical, but air is a fluid, just like water. There is a lot of air stored in one of those big tanks when it it filled to 2200 PSI.
