Ah, "Our friend the atom". Produced by Disney, right? Here's a link to the book! Love that mushroom.

Mid east types have always wanted power, power, power...

The nukyalar (thanks for using the correct prunounciation!) car is great until it is rear ended, then you just evacuate Florida. You okay with that, SP? My favorite was the Swords to Ploughshare programs: nuking a path for the upgraded Panama canal. Those little indigenous brown people just have to move out of the way of progress while we blow the Isthmus of Panama into pieces. Then you can sail the entire pacific fleet through the gap. Not in single file, either.

In '55 or '56, we had an assembly at school sponsored by Jr. Scholastic Mag and GM. At the time, they were having a car designing contest (they did this for a number of years). The assembly was basically to hype the contest.
The GM guys put a little electric car on the table; the roof of the car had whatever form of solar collector they had designed at that point. (Makes you wonder why solar didn't start until the 70's). They turned on a sun lamp, and the car drove across the table.
Remember, this was 50 years ago. If it was doable then, why isn't it now?
