I recall reading that Samsung is to have an MSM6280-based phone commercially available by year-end, featuring a speed tweak to a peak rate of 7.2Mbps. According to a May, 2004 PR, the 6280 was to sample in the second half of 2005. To get a commercial handset on the market by year end, how much would that sampling date need to be accelerated?

The sampling date for the MSM6280 was already accelerated to the 3rd quarter of this year (per February PR), so it is hard to believe that they would be able to pull it in much more. According to this quote from a Korean newspaper, Samsung will "roll out" a MSM6280 based handset in the 3rd quarter. At most, this will likely be similar to what we have today....showing it at a trade show (which would still be an amazing accomplishment).

Samsung Electronics intends to roll out another new HSDPA phone installed with Qualcomm's 7.2Mbps 'MSM6280' chipset in the third quarter of this year.

If Qualcomm/LG/Samsung manage to have a HSDPA handset ready for commercial availability by the end of the year, I think the QCT team should be up for some much deserved bonuses. This would probably be the first time that handsets were ready ahead of the infrastructure in the commercialization of a new technology.
