EU assembly brands Lebanon's Hezbollah 'terrorist'
By Reuters and haaretz Service

The European Parliament branded Lebanon's Hezbollah movement a "terrorist" group on Thursday and urged European Union ministers to take action against the organization.

"Parliament considers that clear evidence exists of terrorist activities by Hezbollah. The [EU] Council should take all necessary steps to curtail them," a non-binding resolution adopted by a big majority said.

The resolution, which also renewed a call for Syria to withdraw its troops and intelligence services from Lebanon, was adopted by 473 votes to eight with 33 abstentions.

The EU is under pressure from the United States and Israel to add the Iranian-backed Hezbollah to its list of outlawed terrorist organizations, obliging member states to seize its assets and take action against its members.

Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom congratulated the vote, saying that there is hard evidence against Hezbollah's support of terrorism. He said this was an important step forward in the war on terrorism.

But several EU governments, concerned about upsetting delicate Middle East negotiations, have so far been reluctant, including France, Spain and Britain.

Hezbollah, a mainly Shi'ite Muslim movement, has broad popular support, notably in south Beirut and southern Lebanon. It has several elected members of the Lebanese parliament and runs welfare services as well as an armed militia.

It became the main resistance force against the Israel occupation of Lebanon between 1982 and 2000, when the Jewish state withdrew unilaterally.

Hezbollah continues to make occasional attacks on Israeli forces in a disputed area known as the Shebaa Farms, which Israel captured from Syria in the 1967 Middle East War but which Lebanon claims as part of its territory.

The Israelis accuse it of training and launching Palestinian suicide attackers in the West Bank and Gaza.
