I played golf with the Chairman of the board of General Instruments a few weeks ago and we were talking about CEOS in general and Irwin in specific. He said that in most of his dealings with CEO types, he found that the technical based guys were far better than the lawyer or business guys in high tech businesses. He cited a few guys he knew that ran giant tech companies who were NOT technical and said it was a disaster.

Having Paul as CEO is not bad, as he understands every peice of the technology and cannot be swayed by some razzle dazzle sales demo from one of his GMs over the right technology for the right reasons. IMJ was always that way and sometimes understood what you were doing almost better than you did...

Having said that, it will be far more interesting to see how the structure UNDER him is built, as that will more than define the basic smoothness of the entire company over time.

Tony was a wonderful finance type, good Ops guys, and just an overall very nice hard working person. He will be VERY hard to replace.

Having IMJ stay as chairman is pretty much a lateral move for him, except he doesn't have to take on the day to day headaches of running the business.
