Examples of emergent phenomena are certainly good studies for how life comes from disorder. Perhaps our best science about origins will come from establishing what level of complexity is required for a self-sustaining system to evolve.

There is some cool stuff with cymatics (sound waves exciting particles of various kinds). I've played around with this... while interesting, it doesn't shed a whole lot of light on the subject of life arising from the background of chaos, but there are some interesting patterns that can be generated. The gee-whiz factor is really high!
