Make changes to attract more enlistees, increase the efficiency of the troops we have, or reduce our demands on the military.

Specifics. We need specifics.

Point 1. The draft did motivate men to enlist to get options.

Point 2. Then we cannot argue about expensive new weapons systems.

Point 3. Amen...but how? I see a few possible changes.
Bring home the rest of the troops stationed in Western Europe.
Civilianize a few more military positions.
Develop and execute a bunker mentality.

But anyone we take out of Europe should probably go to our present weak point...Asia.

We will know more in a few months. A bunch of reserve units have already been alerted for Iraq deployment this summer and fall. Ditto for active duty units. A good number of those active duty folks in country now are on involuntary enlistment extensions that will expire when they get home and many will get out. The Pentagon hopes the new re-up bonuses will entice them to stay. I believe youngsters who enlisted for the college program will get out as well as many of the others. And certainly those who were not allowed to retire will likely do so.

Last fall, I predicted an enlistment problem. Now I predict it to get worse. TWT

My step-brother has just been alerted to redeploy in June. He is still being treated for and recovering from wounds sustained last year. He will go but he is pissed that he can't even have the time necessary to completely recover.

Since my last visit to NC in Dec, I don't get much data not in the public domain about SF. Nobody likes to talk on the phone including me. I will be getting the 5th Special Forces Group Command briefing at Ft Campbell in late June. I will know more about the nitty gritty of what is happening in SF then. We should also know more about enlistments and whether the bonuses are effective by then.

I would luv to be wrong about this.
