Phil > why don't they just start printing and go into debt like every other civilized democratic country?

The SA government plays another game. They keep the interest rate higher than anywhere else, allegedly to combat inflation, but the high interest rate attracts money from everywhere and, in turn, causes more inflation (that's not mentioned) and so they can keep the interest rate high. Meanwhile, the currency inflow gives rise to the strong rand and this the government claims is because of world confidence in it. And so the ANC can refute the Afropessimism of those who maintain that blacks can't run a country. Amazing -- their strong rand policy has virtually destroyed the exports of the country and this is considered to be a symbol of good governance. Anyone (naturally only whites or foreigners) who dares to criticize what is going on is called a racist.
