That stuff is called Poster Putty and I use it for everything.
It comes in different colors.

I roll it in my hands and wrap around the bottom of candles to keep them straight in holders. Use it on the bottom of knick knacks for earthquake protection. It is good to use a small ball of it on the corner of a picture to keep it straight on the wall. I have lots more ideas but I don't want to bore you.
