Sigh. You know, everybody that predicted that worked from the angle that they would express their innate desire to be free. As it turned out, the driving factor was the desire for consumer goods. Who would have expected the Pohl and Kornbluth would have gotten it right in the Merchants of Venus?

A truly depressing book. It was meant, I am sure, as satire, but so much hits the mark in the intervening 50+ years.


I think you're being too cynical..........the Prague Spring did happen. The people of eastern Europe wanted to be free. I just don't think they really knew what that meant. [As an aside, I definitely don't think the Muslims know for sure either.]

With every EE I have met since the wall fell, the first thing they say is how much they are grateful to be free.....of course, the second thing they say is how glad that they are able to shop until they drop.
