That's the size of it. Greenspan headed a commission which raised social security taxes to create a surplus to provide for the future. Then some irresponsible President spent it all on an war in Iraq under false pretenses and some income tax cuts. .

Hi Rich, Re: The issue is can the government as a whole under its total tax revenues and projected budget afford the projected future SS costs . Many of us see this completely differently. As the Republican propagandists insist, "it's our money" and what we really, truly and wholeheartedly hate is the theft of our money by the military brass hats for their insane world domination schemes. Eliminating the grotesque and wasteful occupation of Iraq, the reprehensible and bizarre U.S. Space Command and all the vast pools of unaccounted-for slush funds operating through the Department of Death and Destruction would leave the U.S. with a domestic surplus, enough money to fund our Social Security system, education system, infrastructure and still leave enough cash for a little honest graft. Getting the military whores off our backs would be the best solution to this nation's long term financial woes. Speaking of military whores, I think you've find this very, shall we say, revealing..... hugequestions.com
