The 50% debt to value ratio has no real meaning. This figure includes the 40% of homeowners who have no mortgage. The real ratio for homeowners with a mortgage is quite a different story.

Thanks for the comments! I don't have any data on Japan's housing bubble - that would be interesting.

As far as superimposing over previous bubbles - I can try. Suggest a bubble and I'll give it a shot (are you thinking about the late '70s and late '80s housing bubbles?)
