At its annual Investment Analyst Conference in Park City, Utah, Headwaters will discuss opportunities for expanding the company's current presence in "Clean Coal" and alternative fuels markets. The company believes that pre-combustion technologies offer substantial opportunities for the Clean Coal movement. "There are a variety of technologies and technology opportunities related to coal preparation, coal upgrading and coal treatment that can have a significant impact on coal's environmental performance," said Benson. "Most of the publicity surrounding the 'Clean Coal' movement is focused on finding new ways to burn coal (combustion) or clean emissions after the coal is burned (post-combustion). We believe the pre-combustion area - improving coal before it is burned - offers substantial opportunities." A key advantage to pre-combustion Clean Coal technologies is the ability to utilize the improved fuel in existing power plants with few or no modifications. Pre-combustion technologies also can take advantage of an extensive existing infrastructure of coal handling and treatment facilities. For example, Headwaters has developed a pre-combustion technology that may reduce nitrogen oxide emissions from coal utilizing existing infrastructure. Headwaters plans to deploy new pre-combustion technologies based on both internal development efforts and partnerships with outside parties. The company's previously announced Dry Coal Cleaning effort is an example of Headwaters' leadership in the pre-combustion Clean Coal area. Additional pre-combustion initiatives include coal drying, which can result in improvements to generation efficiency and reduction in SOx and mercury emissions. "With a new paradigm for world oil prices, mounting demand for environmentally improved fuels, and increasing concerns about domestic energy security, we believe the time is right to expand our coal-based liquid fuels efforts in the United States," said Benson. Headwaters is evaluating the potential for construction of coal-to-liquids facilities at several U.S. locations. The company is also evaluating the benefits of engaging in other alternative fuels markets - such as ethanol - that would be compatible with the longer term commercialization of coal-to-liquids technologies.
