Many words mean completely different things to different people- we just don't bump up against it often because we don't go around defining what we mean, and most people always assume the other guy is using the word exactly as he or she would.

Yes, many words are like that. It would seem, though, that if one had come up with a named scientific hypothesis to compete with Darwin's theory, one would pin it down. OTOH, if it's, instead, a political slogan, then I guess a big umbrella over a big tent would be advantageous.

Still, I prefer to know what people are talking about when they use words. If I don't understand, I ask.

My understanding was that ID came about as a result of the failure of creationism to get traction in the schools and the courts. ID was supposed to present a more rational and effective alternative to creationism and a more religion-friendly alternative to evolution.

Maybe ID is a moving target because the hypothesis is being tested and adjusted so it will settle down at some point. Or maybe it's already settled and I just haven't gotten the word yet.
