Yep .. Oil shales are a huge resource worldwide ..
The various recovery processes are water intensive and
several of the world's deposits are in areas where
adequate water is problematic .. And the environmentalists
will object to any attempt to develop oil shale using
surface mining techniques ( cheapest way to process the stuff )
vs lower impact and more expensive in-situ recovery methods ..
There have been several abortive attempts to initiate an
oil shale industry .. last serious effort was during the
1970's oil crisis ..
