Out of the current batch of world leaders, only Tony Blair stands out as a true stateman to me.

I hate that this is true. I see him as a major betrayal. I don't understand what the problem is......most Brits don't know either.

But you are right......he is the only true statesman and he's paying a heavy price for it.

Mindmeld, We're not winning the war of ideas. ... The U.S. is actually closer to Muslim culture, in that the large majority of the U.S. believes in a society grounded in religious principles (the minority secularist movement notwithstanding). Shows you how much Bush has failed to bridge the gap between East and West.

I don't know what Bush can do to bridge that gap. In America, there is a tug-of-war between Christians and secularists, and Muslims aren't impressed with either side. Worse yet, they get confused by the blurred distinctions between the two sides. For example, when they see rap videos with scantily clad girls, and some of them are wearing huge gold crosses, they associate that with the evils of Christianity, even though most Christians actually object to such portrayals.

Also, we're not winning the economic war. Muslim despots have an enormous supply of oil wealth, which they skim straight off of our hard labor. They are free to increase the tax on us if they wish. For all practical purposes, the West has done nothing more than enslaved ourselves through oil, as a new age kind of serf to our Oil Masters.

Oil is an easy political target, but the truth is that the world runs on oil because it's such an excellent source of energy. Sure, we can do a lot to conserve, but that won't change the fact that the mullahs and their terrorist buddies still control vast reserves of oil.

Maybe we can pour more federal dollars into alternative energy research? I'm all for that, but we're already spending ourselves into a hole, and no one has the political courage to suggest a gax tax (which itself is a form of a "consumption tax").
