Air-powered BB guns are just as good for target shooting and can't harm anyone. As for protection, you're more likely to shoot your kids (or they themselves) or get shot with it by an intruder. Also, it's likely that thief will steal it from you and use it in an armed robbery. I also don't think that most would have the intestinal fortitude to shoot someone without hesitation. During that moment of doubt, the assailant would shoot you first with his own or grab it and use it on you. Armed protection is easier said than done. Nice concept, but doesn't make the world a better place. I'd say banning them outright and shutting down the gun factories would do it. But, Colt, Smith & Wesson et. al. have a strong voice through the NRA.
