The first two I had known from high school and the last was my yardman that landed on my doorstep after he had been evicted. I have a brother in law that was literally bankrupted by a host of relatives from his wife's family. Unfortunately the the most admirable intentions can soon be met with resentment when you are dealing with people that don't want to work.

Subsidizing their eventual success (for instance augmenting a minimum wage for people over 25 with checkered work histories to a livable wage) perpetuates the positive behavior of continuous employment.

This is attempted somewhat with the earned income tax credit and I approve of it.
