I should have said that the article I was referring to also said that the great majority of people who declare bankruptcy in Utah are people below the state median in earnings - in other words, POOR people, even by Utah standards. I think the article said only 4% of Utah bankruptcies were from people above the median in the previous year. A lot of the bankruptcies are from people who just owe a few thousand dollars, but to them it's an insurmountable sum to retire.
