I have to give Cronkite credit for being the first anchorman to publicly turn against the Vietnam war. I think his doing this woke sleeping America up, and helped end that war. I thought his recent statements about Rather were pretty shabby though. The thing that no one really picked up on were that the basic facts of the Bush ducking out on Vietnam AND National Guard duty are true, despite the fact that some documents were forged to make the case more damning. Rather was played for a sucker, with documents that fit the rest of the facts. I'm still not sure that Karl Rove wasn't behind it to deep-six the whole Bush service issue, which it did.
