I have taken classes on defensive shooting, and this is one of the key thresholds for one's ability to shoot in self defense. A woman in the class was asked if she could kill someone if he/she was being threatened with deadly force. She didn't think she could. She was then asked if she could do it if she saw he daughter being raped. No problem, she said. So she did have the mindset to do it if she had too. Most of us do. The next part is would you panic and let the other guy shoot you. I have been in situations (without a gun) where one might be needed. I was surprised how clear my thinking got in this situation. Everyone antecdotdaly feels you would crumple to the ground with your eyes shut and the gun extended for the taking. If that is the case with you (or the person doing the pondering), then there is no way I would say you should use a gun in self defense. But you are mistaken when you lump everyone together with incorrect statements like "Bad guys are much more likely to disarm the holder of a gun than the gun holder is likely to fire it into a bad guy". Where do you get your statistics for this? And why do you feel the average joe is so incompetent? Crooks are usually losers (druggies frequently) looking for a soft target. They are not the brightest bulbs on the tree in most cases (as evidenced by choosing to be a criminal), and they have fear like everyone else. And very importanly, a family should have a plan for the possibility of someone breaking into their house. Keep cool, use your training (which you should get if you want to own and use fire arms). The NRA is the best at this, and most training schools partner with the NRA. Please don't tell me that people are too stupid to protect themselves, and that they basically have no or little chance against a bad guy. If that is your belief, then you don't have much of a chance. But most have the capacity to know when their family is in danger and the ability to do something about it. Really frustrating having the people that do not think they can do it shout to me that I can't do it, and worse should not be able to. "It would take some pretty drastic events to change that consciousness for the average joe." Some would consider an intruder breaking into your home that your children are sleeping in to be A "pretty drastic event(s)". I know I would. And I would rather be armed and ready should it ever happen. God bless the USA, and the smart guys who wrote our constitution. They realized the masses aren't quite as incapable as their bosses in England must have thought.
