where is the line of fighting our enemies and supporting our friends. Saddam was giving cash to the bombers against Israel.

We give to our friends all the material and spiritual support we can afford. We should have a strong military so that there is no question about it and no one will attack us - openly. We can and should provide that umbrella support to our closest allies. Short of that, we do not put our troops in harms way.

On Taiwan and South Korea,
what do we do when the shooting starts? I don't think asking Annan and the UN to do something will result in any action.

WRT Taiwan, the Chinese are smart enough to know that they can't win a war with us. They have far too much to lose and very little to gain. They are not as stupid as most of us think. It is the Taiwanese that we have to restrain. We can guarantee them protection as long as they don't provoke China into going to war. IMO China will only go to war if their current leaders lose "face" and lose control over the emotions of their populace. This war is preventable. No one can win in this war. The Chinese will be the biggest losers. But, it will not be a picnic for us either.

WRT South Korea - I think the current course of action is correct. China is dragging their feet, but that is okay because they do not want a nuclear armed North Korea either. That will provoke South Korea and Japan to go nuclear. The Chinese know this and they will not let this happen. They are not completely stupid.

WRT Annan and the UN: We are militarily the strongest nation in the world. We are also the wealthiest. But that doesn't mean everyone will like us. Just like in high school, not everyone will like the smartest, best looking, and best athletes in school. But, when you let things follow its natural course of action, the smartest, best looking, and best athletes are going to be the leaders in the school.

We don't have to act like kids who can't get their acts together and are looking in from outside where the action is taking place. Let's take our place at the head of the table.

Everyone will not like us. Some will hate us, but we should be sitting at the head of the table.
