The NYSE has existed since at least the mid-1800s, so perhaps you're thinking of the NASDAQ ... which began Feb 1971. slk.com

I graphed *all* of the "NASDAQ" data provided by finfacts.com ... including their data from the over-the-counter market, which preceded the NASDAQ electronic exchange. finfacts.com
